COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology with Criminology BA (Hons) degree provides a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between society, crime, and justice. In the first year, students are introduced to key sociological concepts through modules such as Theorising Society, Sociology of Everyday Life, and Becoming a Social Scientist, alongside criminology-focused studies like Introduction to the Criminal Justice System and media analysis in Losing the Plot: Debunking Media Myths. Global Perspectives encourages students to consider social issues in an international context. In the second year, the course deepens this knowledge through modules like Quantitative and Qualitative Methods for Sociologists, Cultures of Contemporary Policing, and Life on the Margins, which explore social control, inequality, and exclusion. Modules such as Crime to Court and Seeing Gender: Feminism and Visual Culture link theory to real-world contexts, while Play, Social Justice and Resistance promotes critical engagement with activism and reform. In the final year, students apply their learning through an Applied Social Science Investigation and explore advanced topics such as Prisons and Probation, Critical Criminology, and Green Criminology. Modules like Communities, Justice and Social Change and Health and Harm in a Changing World foster reflection on inequality, vulnerability, and justice, preparing graduates for socially impactful careers.
