COURSE CURRICULUM

The Photography BA (Hons) degree provides a comprehensive framework for developing both technical proficiency and creative vision in photography. In the first year, students focus on establishing their practice, exploring materials, and gaining a foundational understanding of the history, technology, and theory of photography through modules such as Establishing Practice, Material Explorations, Photography: The History, Technology and Theory of Practice, and Developing Practice. These modules emphasize experimentation, technical skill development, and critical engagement with photographic theory. In the second year, students build on this foundation with modules including Photography and Society, Making, Sensing, Thinking, Professional Networks, Realisation and Exposition, and Art: Ethics and Aesthetics, which encourage exploration of photography within wider social, cultural, and ethical contexts while fostering professional skills and collaborative practices. Opportunities for exchange and networking further prepare students for the professional world. The third year allows students to consolidate their learning and refine their artistic voice through advanced studio practice, a dissertation, a degree show, and modules focused on professional futures. By the end of the program, graduates possess strong technical abilities, a critical understanding of photographic culture and practice, and the creative confidence to communicate ideas effectively, making them well-prepared for careers in artistic, commercial, or journalistic photography.
