COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music BA (Hons) degree at York St John University provides a practical and immersive environment for developing skills in performance, composition, and music facilitation. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules such as Musicking, Perspectives on Music 1, Ensembles and Teamwork, VOX, and Drumming, focusing on technical proficiency, ensemble collaboration, and creative exploration. The second year expands this knowledge with Ensemble Strategies, Perspectives on Music 2, Musical Exploration, Professional Contexts and Practice, Composition Strategies, Principles of Community Music, and Solo Performance Strategies, encouraging students to develop their individual artistic voice while engaging in professional contexts and collaborative projects. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through advanced modules including Ensembles and Leadership, Dissertation, Collaborative Project, Enterprise and Employability, Advanced Composition, Advanced Solo Performance, and Professional Practices in Community Music, allowing them to refine their performance, composition, and leadership skills while preparing for careers in the music industry. Throughout the course, students engage with diverse musical genres and styles, develop critical listening and analytical skills, and gain experience in both individual and ensemble settings.
