COURSE CURRICULUM

The Media and English Literature BA (Hons) degree offers an interdisciplinary exploration of literature and media, examining how texts and media shape culture, society, and individual identity. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation through modules such as Media, Culture and Society, Introduction to Literary Studies 1 and 2, Theorising Literature: Power and Identity, Research in Practice, Writing, Research and Literature, Mediated Identities, and Media Evolution and History, developing skills in critical analysis, research, and understanding of media and literary contexts. The second year broadens this knowledge with modules including Literature at Work, Media Enterprise, Taste, Controversy and Culture, Music and Media, Visual Culture, Imaginary Worlds: Researching Science Fiction, Adaptations, Mapping America, Literary Theory, Science Fiction for Survival, The Romantic Imagination, Sick Stories, Shakespeare: Perspectives, Conflicting Words, Life Online, and various creative writing modules, providing opportunities to study a wide range of literary and media forms while exploring cultural, historical, and theoretical frameworks. In the final year, students engage in advanced study through a Dissertation or Research Project, Animations, Futures, Research Now I and II, Writing the Caribbean, Hunger, Rebellion and Rage: The Victorians, Experiments and Upheavals: Twentieth-Century Cultural Change, Literary Legacies, The Making of Modern Drama, American Radicals, What Now? What Next? Twenty-First Century Literature, Gender and Sexualities, Media Spaces, Pop Americana, and creative writing modules. Graduates emerge with strong analytical, critical, research, and communication skills, prepared for careers in media, publishing, journalism, creative writing, or further study in literature and media.
