COURSE CURRICULUM

The Illustration BA (Hons) degree provides a comprehensive pathway for developing creative, technical, and professional skills in visual storytelling and narrative illustration. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules such as Drawing, Context: Making Art and Artists, Visual Narratives, and Presenting Representation, which introduce key techniques, conceptual thinking, and methods for communicating ideas visually. The second year focuses on expanding creative practice and professional development, with modules including Engagement, Making, Sensing, Thinking, Exhibition, Art: Ethics and Aesthetics, and Professional Networks, allowing students to experiment with materials and techniques, understand ethical considerations, and develop connections within the industry, including opportunities for exchange experiences. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through Advanced Studio practice, a Dissertation, the Degree Show, and Professional Futures, enabling them to create a substantial body of work, reflect critically on their practice, and prepare for professional careers. Throughout the program, students explore both traditional and digital illustration methods, narrative construction, and the broader cultural and historical contexts of illustration. Graduates are equipped with the skills, creativity, and professional understanding to pursue careers in publishing, editorial illustration, advertising, animation, concept art, graphic novels, and other creative industries, producing visually compelling work that communicates stories effectively and resonates with diverse audiences.
