COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film Studies BA (Hons) degree offers a comprehensive study of cinema, its history, cultural significance, and evolving relationship with media and society. In the first year, students develop a foundation through modules exploring filmmakers, cult and extreme cinema, British cinema, research methods, film history covering industry, technology, and exhibition, and the social impact of cinema. This year equips students with analytical and research skills essential for understanding film in context. The second year expands on these skills by examining genre and thematic studies, including gothic and horror, marginal cinema, science fiction, American cinema, European cinema, and media enterprise, allowing students to explore diverse cinematic traditions and industry perspectives. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through a dissertation and advanced modules in animation, documentary film studies, transnational cinema, gender and sexualities, and contemporary popular culture, fostering independent research and critical engagement. The program encourages students to analyse films critically, considering aesthetic, historical, social, and cultural dimensions, while also understanding the broader media landscape. Graduates are prepared for careers in film analysis, criticism, curation, education, media research, or further academic study, equipped with the skills to engage thoughtfully with cinema and its cultural, social, and technological developments.
