COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film Studies and Media BA (Hons) degree provides a comprehensive examination of film, media, and cultural contexts, combining theoretical analysis with research and critical study. In the first year, students build a foundation through modules exploring filmmakers and their work, research methods, media, culture and society, film audiences, mediated identities, and critical perspectives, developing the analytical and interpretive skills necessary for advanced study. The second year broadens this knowledge, offering students opportunities to engage with media enterprise, convergence cultures, science fiction, American cinema, globalisation, music and media, visual culture, independent and European cinema, gothic and horror genres, and life online. This allows students to understand both the artistry of film and the cultural and social forces that shape media production and reception. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through advanced study and independent research, including a dissertation, while exploring topics such as futures in media, animation, documentary film studies, transnational cinema, media spaces, and issues of gender and sexuality. The program equips graduates with the critical, analytical, and research skills required to pursue careers in media, film criticism, cultural analysis, journalism, education, or further study, fostering a deep understanding of the interplay between film, media, and society in a global and evolving cultural landscape.
