COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Literature degree provides a comprehensive study of literary texts, cultural contexts, and critical theory over three years. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules such as Introduction to Literary Studies 1 and 2, Writing, Research and Literature, Forms of Narrative, Theorising Literature: Power and Identity, and Canonicity. These modules develop essential skills in literary analysis, critical thinking, and research, while introducing students to key concepts and debates in literature. The second year expands on this knowledge, combining theoretical and creative study through modules including Literature at Work, Literary Theory, Dawn of Print, Adaptations, Science Fiction for Survival, Shakespeare: Perspectives, Conflicting Words, The Romantic Imagination, Sick Stories: Narratives of Illness, Culture, Controversy and Media, and various creative writing modules. Students engage with a wide range of genres, periods, and cultural contexts, developing analytical, interpretive, and creative skills. In the final year, students undertake advanced study and independent research through modules such as the English Literature Research Project, Literary Legacies, Hunger, Rebellion, and Rage: The Victorians, Experiments and Upheavals, The Making of Modern Drama, and Contemporary Writing. Graduates leave with strong research, critical analysis, and communication skills, prepared for careers in education, publishing, media, cultural industries, or further postgraduate study, with a nuanced understanding of literature’s role in society and culture.
