COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Literature and Religion degree provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary study over three years, combining literary analysis with the study of religion to develop critical thinking, empathy, and independent reasoning. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as Studying Religion, Introduction to Literary Studies 1 and 2, Values and Virtues, Writing, Research and Literature, and Religion, Peace and Conflict. These modules introduce key concepts in religious studies and literary analysis, while fostering research and communication skills. The second year expands this understanding with modules covering literature, religion, ethics, philosophy, and social contexts, including From Descartes to the Death of God, Matters of Life and Death, Problems of Evil, Religion and Literature, Religion and Politics, Sociology of Religion, Theology and the Environment, and practical literary studies and adaptations. This allows students to engage critically with diverse texts and ideas, exploring moral, spiritual, and cultural issues across historical and contemporary contexts. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through specialized modules such as Dissertation, Feminist Ethics and Religion, Theology and Ethics through Film, Religion and Genocides, Religion and Globalisation, Religion and Visual Culture, and Literary Legacies, alongside creative and research-focused modules. Graduates leave with analytical, research, and communication skills, prepared for careers in education, research, publishing, cultural and religious organizations, or further postgraduate study, with a nuanced understanding of literature, religion, and society.
