COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Literature and Film Studies degree offers a comprehensive exploration of literature and cinema over three years, combining critical analysis, creative practice, and research. In the first year, students build foundational skills through modules such as Introduction to Literary Studies 1 and 2, Filmmakers on Film, Research in Practice, Writing, Research and Literature, Film and its Audiences, and Theorising Literature: Power and Identity. These modules develop analytical, research, and interpretive skills while introducing key concepts in literary and film studies. The second year expands on these foundations, offering a diverse range of modules including Media Enterprise, Literature at Work, Film and the American Imagination, Culture, Controversy and Media, European and Independent Cinema, Gothic and Horror, Literary Theory, Adaptations, Shakespeare: Perspectives, and various creative writing modules. This combination allows students to explore different genres, cultural contexts, and media forms, while gaining practical and professional experience. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through advanced study and research, including modules such as Dissertation or Research Project, Transnational Cinema, Documentary Film Studies, Animations, Literary Legacies, The Making of Modern Drama, and Contemporary Writing 1 and 2. Graduates develop strong critical, analytical, and creative skills, preparing them for careers in media, publishing, cultural industries, or further academic study, with an in-depth understanding of the interplay between literature, film, and society.
