COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Language, Linguistics and TESOL degree is structured to develop students’ understanding of language and equip them with practical skills for teaching English in multilingual contexts. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through modules such as Introduction to Linguistics and Multilingualism, Semantics and Pragmatics, Key Concepts for TESOL, Descriptive Grammar of English, The Sounds of Language, and Introduction to British Sign Language. These modules provide a strong grounding in linguistic theory, language structure, and communication, alongside an introduction to English language teaching. In the second year, students explore more advanced topics, including Second Language Acquisition and TESOL, Phonetics and Phonology, World Englishes, Language, Gender and Sexuality, Analysing Media Discourse, Language at Work, Forensic Linguistics, Children’s Literacy Development, and Psycholinguistics. These modules combine theoretical understanding with practical application, enabling students to examine language use, acquisition, and variation in diverse contexts. In the final year, students focus on TESOL practice and specialist topics through modules such as Lesson and Materials Design for TESOL, Attitudes to Language, Child Language Acquisition, English Accents and Dialects, Language, Identities and Cultures, Communication Disorder and Difference, Reflections on Linguistics in Education, and the Dissertation. The program equips graduates with analytical, research, and pedagogical skills, preparing them for careers in English language teaching, education, language consultancy, or further study, while fostering cultural awareness and professional confidence in multilingual environments.
