COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology degree is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of crime, its social context, and the criminal justice system across three years of study. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as Criminology Uncovered, Criminology of Everyday Life, Becoming a Social Scientist, Introduction to the Criminal Justice System, Losing the Plot: Debunking Media Myths, and Global Perspectives. These modules introduce key concepts in criminology, social research, and the influence of media on perceptions of crime. The second year expands students’ analytical and practical skills with modules including Qualitative Methods for Criminologists, Quantitative Methods for Criminologists, Crime to Court, Cultures of Contemporary Policing, Police Custodial Practice, Life on the Margins: Inequality, Exclusion and Social Control, Global Disaster, and What’s Next in Your Career. These focus on research methods, social inequalities, policing, and the progression from crime to legal outcomes. In the final year, students apply their learning through advanced modules such as Applied Social Science Investigation, Prisons and Probation, Communities, Justice and Social Change, Go Home: State, Society and Media Responses to Immigration, Crimetime Media, Critical Criminology, Sex Work, and Green Criminology: Social and Ecological Justice. The program equips graduates with research, analytical, and critical thinking skills, preparing them for careers in criminal justice, social policy, policing, advocacy, and related fields.
