COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Creative Writing and English Literature degree is structured to develop students’ analytical, research, and creative skills across three years. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through modules such as Introduction to Literary Studies 1 and 2, Forms of Narrative, Introduction to Creative Writing, Writing to Order, Writing, Research and Literature, Theorising Literature: Power and Identity, and Creative Research for Creative Writers. These modules build critical reading, literary analysis, and basic creative writing skills while encouraging students to explore the relationship between theory and practice. The second year expands these skills through a wide range of literature and writing modules, including Literature at Work, Working with Words: Publishing and Performance, Adaptations, Science Fiction for Survival, and Literary Theory, alongside genre-focused creative writing modules such as Writing Fiction, Writing Poetry, Scriptwriting, and Writing Reality: Creative Non-Fiction. Students also examine historical, cultural, and thematic contexts across texts, including Shakespeare, Romantic literature, narratives of illness, and American literature. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through an English Literature Research Project or Creative Writing Dissertation, while exploring advanced modules such as Writing Genres, Contemporary Writing, Literary Legacies, Modern Drama, Caribbean Writing, Gender and Sexualities, and Research Now I and II. The program equips graduates with strong analytical, creative, and research skills for careers in writing, publishing, media, or further study.
