ABOUT UNIVERSITY

York St John University (YSJ), originally established as York Diocesan College in 1841, is a public university situated on an urban campus in York, England. The institution achieved full university status in 2006 and gained research degree awarding powers in 2015. Rooted in its Anglican heritage, YSJ is one of the higher education institutions with religious foundations and is a member of the Cathedrals Group of Universities. The university’s mission has long focused on widening access to education for individuals from diverse backgrounds. As of 2022, it enrolled approximately 8,350 students across five academic schools: the School of the Arts, the School of Education, Language and Psychology, the School of Humanities, the School of Science, Technology and Health, and York Business School. YSJ traces its history to two Anglican teacher training colleges founded in York in the 1840s—one for men (1841) and one for women (1846). The women’s college relocated to Ripon in 1862, and over the next century, both colleges expanded their academic offerings beyond teacher education. In 1974, they merged to form the College of Ripon and York St John. This merged institution became a college of the University of Leeds in 1990, which enabled it to award degrees through Leeds while maintaining autonomy. Between 1999 and 2001, all operations were consolidated in York, and the college was renamed York St John College. In 2006, it gained the right to award its own degrees and adopt the title York St John University. The institution’s first Chancellor, Archbishop of York John Sentamu, was formally installed in 2007 at York Minster and served for twelve years before being succeeded by BBC broadcaster Reeta Chakrabarti in 2019. Today, York St John University continues its long-standing tradition of academic excellence and inclusive education.
