ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Wrexham University is a public university located in north-east Wales, with campuses in Wrexham, Northop, and St Asaph. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional courses and had around 6,045 students in the 2023–24 academic year. The university traces its origins to the Wrexham School of Science and Art, founded in 1887. Over time, it evolved through a series of mergers and name changes, becoming the Denbighshire Technical Institute in 1927, Denbighshire Technical College in 1939, and the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (NEWI) in 1975. Initially, its degrees were validated by the University of Salford. NEWI became an associate member of the University of Wales in 1993 and gained full membership in 2004, allowing it to validate and deliver its own degrees. In 2008, it achieved full university status and was renamed Glyndŵr University in honor of Owain Glyndŵr, a Welsh hero who advocated for universities in Wales. In 2016, the name changed to Wrexham Glyndŵr University, and in 2023 it officially became Wrexham University, reflecting the city’s growing global recognition. The rebranding was approved by the Privy Council and symbolized a closer connection to Wrexham’s identity and cultural resurgence, influenced by the success of Wrexham A.F.C. and the TV series “Welcome to Wrexham.” The university’s School of Creative Arts runs the Wall Recording Studio on its Plas Coch campus. Despite challenges such as the temporary suspension of its license to sponsor international students in 2014, Wrexham University has continued to grow in reputation and remains dedicated to providing practical education and celebrating Welsh heritage while maintaining ties with the Owain Glyndŵr Society.
