COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Relations and Security MA equips students with advanced knowledge and analytical skills to address contemporary global security challenges. Core modules cover the fundamental theories of international security, exploring issues such as intervention, terrorism, and self-defence, while providing rigorous training in research methods and dissertation work. The program emphasises critical engagement with current debates in security studies, encouraging students to examine the political, social, and governmental processes that shape global security practices. Optional modules allow learners to broaden their understanding through comparative studies in areas such as global political economy, energy and climate change, democratic innovations, diplomacy, human rights, and regional security dynamics. Students explore complex topics including the politics of the United States, the European Union as an international actor, governance and sustainable development, and the interplay between gender, sexuality, and international relations. By combining theoretical frameworks with contemporary case studies, the course develops the ability to critically assess security policies, conflicts, and power relationships in a global context. Graduates emerge with a nuanced understanding of international security issues and the practical and analytical skills required for careers in international organisations, government institutions, policy research, diplomacy, and other fields where expertise in global security and international relations is essential.
