COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language and Linguistics MSc is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of language in contemporary and global contexts, combining theoretical knowledge with practical applications. Core modules, such as English Worldwide, explore the global use and variation of English, while Language and Learning: Description and Analysis focuses on the structures, patterns, and acquisition of language. The Multilingualism: Concepts and Applications module examines the cognitive, social, and cultural dimensions of multilingual communication, preparing students to analyze language use across diverse settings. A key component of the program is the dissertation, which enables students to undertake an independent research project, applying the concepts and methods learned throughout the course to a topic of their choice. Option modules, including Analysing Spoken and Written Discourse, Language and Gender, Language in Society, and Languages for Specific Purposes, allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, providing insights into sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and applied language contexts. The program emphasizes critical thinking, research skills, and the practical application of linguistic theories, equipping graduates for careers in education, communication, research, translation, or further academic study.
