The Art and Visual Culture MA offers a structured yet flexible curriculum designed to develop advanced understanding of contemporary visual culture. Core modules include Contemporary Art and Visual Culture, which provides students with in-depth engagement with current artistic practices and debates, and Critical Approaches to Art and Visual Culture, which equips students with analytical tools to interrogate visual culture from multiple theoretical perspectives. The Dissertation allows students to undertake an independent, research-led project, synthesizing their learning and exploring a topic of personal or professional interest in depth. Alongside these, a wide range of option modules enables students to tailor their studies to individual interests and career goals. Options such as Capitalism and Culture, Digital Cultures, and Urban Cultures explore the intersections of visual culture with society, technology, and the urban environment, while modules like Engaging the Archive, Heritage in Action, and Museum Narratives, Audiences and Programming provide practical insights into curation, heritage management, and audience engagement. Students can also choose modules focused on professional development, including Work Placement in Cultural Institutions and Management in Cultural and Heritage Institutions, gaining hands-on experience and workplace skills.
