COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology and Counselling BSc Honours provides a comprehensive education in both theoretical and applied psychology, integrating counselling skills to prepare students for professional practice or further study. In Year 1, students build a foundation in core areas of psychology, including biological, cognitive, developmental, social, and individual differences, alongside an introduction to psychological research methods. This year develops essential analytical, critical thinking, and research skills, forming the basis for more advanced study. Year 2 focuses on applied and practical aspects, with modules in counselling skills and practice, diverse therapeutic approaches including humanistic, psychodynamic, and cognitive behavioural methods, and emotional life. Students also develop employability skills, explore societal responses to climate change, and study psychological diversity, combining theory with practical application and professional preparation. In Year 3, the curriculum allows students to specialise and deepen their understanding through modules such as clinical psychology, cognitive disorders, health psychology, occupational psychology, forensic psychology, political psychology, and consciousness, alongside professional issues in a critical context. Students undertake a research project to develop independent research skills, critical analysis, and ethical awareness. Throughout the course, students integrate psychological theory with counselling practice, preparing them for careers in mental health services, counselling, clinical psychology, research, education, and related psychology fields, with a strong emphasis on ethical, cultural, and professional considerations.
