COURSE CURRICULUM

This Economics degree provides students with a comprehensive understanding of economic theory, policy, and practical applications across global and local contexts. In the first year, students gain a solid grounding in economics, exploring both microeconomics and macroeconomics, financial economics, mathematics for economists, and the historical evolution of economic thought. They examine real-world scenarios, such as how high street businesses compete with online suppliers, and have the option to study modules that broaden their knowledge, including foreign languages. In the second year, students advance their understanding of economic analysis, managerial economics, market structures, and macroeconomic management, while developing technical data analysis skills using tools like SPSS. Optional modules allow students to explore topics such as global financial markets, the digital economy, climate change, and Brexit, applying research and appraisal techniques to real-world initiatives. In the final year, the focus shifts to contemporary economic policy debates, econometric analysis, forecasting, and applied financial economics. Students undertake a dissertation on a topic of their choice, developing skills in data handling, quantitative analysis, and decision-making. Throughout the course, students gain the expertise needed to evaluate complex economic issues, inform business strategy, and support the development and implementation of policy, preparing them for careers in business, government, or further postgraduate study.
