COURSE CURRICULUM

The Spanish and Linguistics BA offers a comprehensive study of both the Spanish language and linguistics, preparing students for careers that require advanced language skills and cross-cultural competence. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of language study, exploring how language functions and is used across different contexts, alongside Spanish language and cultural studies. Modules cover topics such as the study of language and culture, translation for intermediate students, and the social life of material culture, as well as an overview of world varieties of English, providing a broad understanding of linguistic diversity. In the second year, the course deepens students’ knowledge of linguistic theory and practice, examining child language acquisition, language structure and meaning, and multilingual communication in both public and digital contexts. Spanish culture is further explored, enhancing students’ intercultural awareness and language proficiency. In the final year, students focus on applied language studies and advanced topics in linguistics, including language contact and change, language form, and multilingualism in society, while continuing their Spanish studies through themes in contemporary Hispanic culture. A substantial final year project or dissertation, combined with optional work placements, allows students to apply their skills in real-world contexts, ensuring they graduate with strong linguistic, analytical, and professional capabilities suitable for careers in translation, international communication, education, and research.
