COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology and Criminology course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of society, social structures, and the causes and consequences of crime. In the first year, students explore foundational concepts through modules on criminological perspectives, controversies in criminal justice, psychology and crime, social media and culture, and the study of identity, gender, and human rights. This broad introduction develops critical thinking and research skills while grounding students in key sociological and criminological theories. In the second year, the curriculum deepens, examining contemporary social issues such as childhood, youth and society, education, emotional life, leisure and consumption, and the impact of globalization on crime and media. Students also study forensic psychology, radical criminology, and research methods, while gaining practical experience through work-based learning opportunities. The final year allows students to specialize and engage with advanced topics, including contemporary criminal justice, social theory, state crime, human rights, media and crime, immigration, and social movements. A dissertation in sociology and criminology enables independent research, while additional modules explore families, gender, education, religion, and the cultural politics of race. Across all years, the course emphasizes critical analysis, real-world applications, and professional preparation, equipping graduates with the knowledge and skills to pursue careers in criminal justice, social research, policy, or further academic study.
