COURSE CURRICULUM

The Policing BA is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of contemporary policing, criminal justice, and the legal framework in the UK, preparing them for careers as police officers or police staff. In Year 1, students gain foundational knowledge of policing and criminal law, including crime and punishment, police powers, investigation and evidence, public law, and the genealogy of modern policing, alongside modules exploring rights, social media, and race. This year establishes the core principles and critical thinking skills needed for professional practice. Year 2 focuses on advancing practical and analytical skills through modules in advanced investigation and evidence, criminology, community building, European criminal law, child protection, human rights, law and mental health, and professional practice. Students also explore public protection, vulnerability, and issues such as women in policing, while developing leadership and management skills. In Year 3, students have the flexibility to align their studies with professional practice through the Solicitors Qualifying Exam pathway or pursue an extended research project in policing or related legal areas. Modules include advanced criminal law, countering terrorism, family law, business and property law, human rights, and professional legal practice or research. Throughout the degree, students develop practical, ethical, and analytical skills, equipping them to respond effectively to modern policing challenges and pursue careers across operational, strategic, and research-focused roles in law enforcement.
