COURSE CURRICULUM

The Languages and Translation BA Honours is structured to provide a progressive and practical understanding of language, culture, and translation across three years of study. In the first year, students build a foundation in language and cultural studies through modules such as Introduction to Translation, Interpersonal and Intercultural Communication, Introduction to the Study of Language and Culture, and World Varieties of English, alongside cultural studies in Arabic, Chinese, French, or Spanish. The second year focuses on developing translation skills and cultural knowledge in more depth, with modules like Building Translation Competence, Multilingual e-Collaboration, and Understanding Culture, while also exploring identity, representation, and language in public spaces. By the final year, the emphasis shifts to advanced professional training, where students engage with Computer-Assisted Translation, Machine Translation, and Post-Editing, as well as Towards Professional Translation and Professionalising International Communication. The third year also encourages specialization through options in Arabic, Chinese, French, or Spanish studies, and offers opportunities for applied learning through work placements and the Final Year Project. With a focus on both theory and practice, the course equips students with the linguistic expertise, cultural awareness, and professional skills required to pursue careers in translation, international communication, and related fields.
