COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and Politics BA at Westminster provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to understanding societies, combining historical study with political analysis. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in British politics, global governance, and development, alongside historical contexts such as Britain in the long nineteenth century and social movements, while tutorials develop critical thinking and research skills. In the second year, the course deepens understanding through the study of global historical events, including the Age of Extremes, European governance, and the interplay of power, media, and morality, as well as specialised historical topics addressing race, gender, and social change. Political theory and international relations are explored in parallel, giving students the tools to analyse contemporary governance and policy challenges. The final year emphasises independent research and professional development, with a dissertation and opportunities for internships and work placements. Students engage with contemporary political issues, postcolonial politics, the Middle East, and social and political movements, linking historical insight to modern practice. Across all levels, the program encourages global perspectives, the inclusion of marginalised voices, and the examination of power, identity, and social change. Graduates emerge with strong analytical, research, and critical skills, prepared for careers in government, international organisations, journalism, education, and research, or for further academic study.
