COURSE CURRICULUM

The French and Linguistics BA at Westminster offers an integrated program that develops proficiency in French language and culture alongside a comprehensive understanding of linguistic theory and analysis. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts in language and culture, exploring language structures, translation skills, world varieties of English, and the social and cultural significance of material objects. This establishes a strong base for both theoretical and applied language studies. The second year expands on these foundations with topics such as child language acquisition, expressions of French culture, language in public spaces, language structure and meaning, and multilingual collaboration, alongside an emphasis on understanding Francophone cultures. These modules develop analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing students for more advanced study. In the third year, students consolidate their learning through applied language studies, a final year project, and specialised modules covering language contact and change, multilingualism, language form, and contemporary French and Francophone themes. Students also engage with professional and practical experiences through work placements. The degree balances academic rigour with practical employability, equipping graduates with advanced linguistic skills, cultural awareness, and analytical expertise, preparing them for careers in international communication, translation, education, and other fields requiring high-level language competence.
