COURSE CURRICULUM

The French and English BA at Westminster provides a comprehensive study of both languages, combining linguistic, literary, and cultural perspectives to prepare students for graduate employment and global careers. In Year 1, students build foundational skills through modules such as Introducing English Language, Introduction to the Study of Language and Culture, Language and Text, and The French World and the Word, developing both language proficiency and cultural awareness. Year 2 deepens understanding with modules that explore French culture, the history of the English language, multilingual collaboration, spoken discourse analysis, and literature, enabling students to apply their skills in practical and analytical contexts. This year also encourages critical engagement with social and cultural issues, enhancing interpretive and research skills. In Year 3, students consolidate their learning through advanced modules, including a final year project, studies in language and power, multilingualism in society, and contemporary French and Francophone themes. Optional modules such as Work Placement for Humanities provide experiential learning opportunities to prepare students for professional environments. Throughout the course, students develop linguistic precision, cross-cultural understanding, and analytical expertise, alongside transferable skills in communication, research, and critical thinking. Graduates leave equipped to pursue careers in translation, international relations, education, media, and cultural industries, or to continue with postgraduate study in language, literature, or cultural studies.
