COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film BA at Westminster offers a comprehensive three-year program designed to develop students into skilled and versatile filmmakers. In the first year, students build a foundation in both documentary and fiction production, working in small groups to shoot and edit projects on 16mm film and digital formats. Core modules cover documentary filmmaking, creativity and collaboration, production design, visual effects, working with actors, and an introduction to film and television, alongside specialist screen options to develop technical and creative skills. In the second year, students focus on advanced and specialist areas such as directing, cinematography, screenwriting, producing, editing, and sound, enabling them to contribute effectively to larger production crews. Work-based learning is integrated through short placements or equivalent industry experiences, while modules explore contemporary issues, television drama, and social identities in film and media. The third year emphasizes professional preparation, with students undertaking drama, documentary, and commercial production projects, alongside research projects and an industry-focused module. This stage allows students to consolidate their technical, creative, and analytical skills while developing a portfolio that demonstrates their abilities to potential employers. Throughout the course, students are supported in cultivating a personal voice, understanding industry practices, and gaining the knowledge and practical experience required to pursue careers in film, television, and related media industries.
