COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature BA is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of literature within its wider social, cultural, and historical contexts. In the first year, students develop foundational skills through modules such as Children’s Literature, Shakespeare and Performance, Poetry and Politics, and Key Words for Literary Studies, which introduce essential concepts and analytical approaches to literature while encouraging engagement with texts for pleasure and critical exploration. The second year expands students’ knowledge, exploring significant literary movements, historical periods, and cultural debates. Modules such as Romanticisms, Realisms, The Victorian World, and Writing Revolutions encourage students to analyze the connections between literature and its cultural, historical, and political environments, while tutorials foster independent thinking and interpretation. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through advanced modules including Fiction After 1950, The Modernist World, Tragedy: Ancient to Modern, and issues in culture, alongside a dissertation that develops research, analytical, and critical writing skills. Opportunities for work placements enhance professional experience and employability. Across all three years, the degree emphasizes transferable skills such as critical thinking, research, interpretation, and communication.
