COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature and Language BA combines the study of literature with an in-depth exploration of the English language, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of both textual and linguistic analysis. In the first year, students build a foundation in literary studies, examining keywords, poetry, Shakespeare, and the politics of literature, while also exploring language through world varieties of English and the study of texts. The second year expands this knowledge, covering the history of the English language, language and literary style, and key literary movements such as Romanticisms and Realisms, alongside modules on child language acquisition, spoken discourse analysis, and cultural memory, preparing students for more specialized study. In the final year, students undertake a dissertation and advanced projects exploring contemporary and historical literature, modernist works, fiction after 1950, and the role of sexualities and culture, alongside applied and theoretical linguistics, including forensic linguistics, translation studies, and historical linguistics. The program also incorporates teaching and education modules, allowing students to explore pedagogical theory and practice, and includes opportunities for work placements to gain professional experience. This degree develops critical thinking, research, and communication skills, equipping graduates for careers in education, publishing, journalism, writing, and other fields requiring advanced literary and linguistic competence.
