COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature and History BA offers an interdisciplinary approach that combines literary analysis with historical study, allowing students to understand how literature reflects and responds to social, political, and cultural events. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts in literary studies and history, exploring key texts, global perspectives on the long nineteenth century, and the intersections of poetry, politics, and social protest. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and research skills while providing insight into the historical contexts that shape literary production. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through the study of pivotal periods, such as the age of extremes, Victorian society, and activism in the United States, while examining themes like race, politics, memory, and cultural representation. Modules encourage students to consider moral and social debates in literature and history, including the depiction of crime, monsters, and social change. In the final year, the focus shifts to independent research through the dissertation, internships, and specialized projects, allowing students to investigate modern and contemporary literature, historical crises, and archival research. Graduates develop strong analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in education, research, cultural institutions, media, publishing, and other roles requiring critical thinking and an interdisciplinary perspective.
