COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology BA Honours provides a thorough exploration of crime, justice, and the social, cultural, and political factors shaping them, equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary for professional and academic success. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts, including criminological perspectives, the psychology of crime, justice and human rights, and the study of crime in historical and contemporary contexts, alongside research skills essential for evidence-based analysis. In the second year, the focus shifts to specialized topics such as forensic criminal psychology, youth crime, gender and race in criminal justice, globalization, and radical criminology, while offering practical experience through work-based learning. This stage emphasizes the development of critical thinking, analytical abilities, and research competence. The final year allows students to deepen their expertise through advanced study of contemporary issues in criminal justice, policing, punishment, human rights, state crime, immigration, media representations of crime, and psychology in crime perception. Students undertake a dissertation and have opportunities for practical work experience, enabling them to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world contexts. By combining interdisciplinary study with practical skills development, the course prepares graduates for careers in law enforcement, social services, policy, research, advocacy, and related fields requiring analytical, problem-solving, and communication capabilities.
