COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chinese and Linguistics BA provides a comprehensive study of language, culture, and applied linguistics, preparing students for graduate employment in a variety of fields. In the first year, students develop a foundation in exploring language, the study of language and culture, world varieties of English, and the social life of material culture, alongside Chinese language and cultural studies. This year emphasizes analytical and communication skills, introducing students to the broader contexts in which language operates. In the second year, students deepen their understanding through modules such as child language acquisition, language structure and meaning, expressions of Chinese culture, language in public spaces, and multilingual e-collaboration on current affairs. These subjects enhance both linguistic competence and cultural literacy, while encouraging collaborative and research-based learning. The third year focuses on advanced topics, including applied language studies, language contact and change, multilingualism in society, and the continuation of Chinese cultural studies. Students undertake a final year project and have opportunities for work placements, allowing them to gain practical experience and professional skills. Throughout the program, the curriculum integrates theory, research, and applied practice, equipping students with the knowledge, analytical abilities, and cultural insights needed to pursue careers in translation, international communication, education, research, or other roles requiring advanced linguistic and cross-cultural expertise.
