COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chinese and International Relations BA provides a comprehensive exploration of global politics, governance, democracy, and human rights while equipping students with advanced Chinese language skills. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts, including critical perspectives on global politics, democracy in crisis, international relations, and the study of language and culture, alongside insights into material culture and the Chinese world. The second year builds on this foundation with a focus on geopolitics, global security, Middle East politics, and expressions of Chinese culture. Students develop practical skills in multilingual collaboration and examine real-world issues such as the politics of conflict while deepening their understanding of international relations theory. In the third year, students consolidate their learning through advanced modules covering energy and development in China and Asia, ethics, morality, and world order, foreign policy and diplomacy, and postcolonial politics. The curriculum also emphasizes applied learning through a final year project and work placement, offering opportunities to engage with contemporary issues in Chinese studies and global affairs. By integrating political analysis, intercultural understanding, and linguistic proficiency, the program prepares graduates for careers in diplomacy, international organisations, policy analysis, global governance, and other fields where strategic thinking, cultural literacy, and Chinese language skills are essential.
