COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chinese and International Communication BA is designed to develop students’ proficiency in the Chinese language and culture while equipping them with the professional communication skills necessary for global contexts. In the first year, students build a foundational understanding of interpersonal and intercultural communication, language and culture studies, and world varieties of English. They also explore the social life of material culture and gain insights into the Chinese world and its linguistic and cultural dimensions. In the second year, students expand their knowledge through advanced modules, focusing on visual representation, meaning and identity, expressions of Chinese culture, language in public spaces, and multilingual collaboration on current affairs. These modules encourage practical application of communication strategies in diverse and cross-cultural contexts. In the third year, students consolidate their learning through a final year project and specialized modules on mediation in international contexts, professionalising international communication, and multilingualism in society. Additional modules examine contemporary issues, identities on the move, and themes in Chinese studies, complemented by a work placement to provide real-world professional experience. By integrating language proficiency, cultural understanding, and applied communication skills, the degree prepares graduates for careers in international relations, corporate communications, media, translation, and other fields requiring advanced intercultural and professional communication capabilities.
