COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chinese and Language Studies BA at Westminster is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of both the Chinese language and its cultural context, preparing them for graduate employment and professional communication roles. In the first year, students build foundational skills in English and Chinese language, translation, and cultural analysis, alongside exploring the social life of material culture and how meaning is constructed in texts. Year one emphasizes practical language acquisition, critical thinking, and introductory cultural studies, forming a strong base for more advanced topics. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of Chinese culture, literary history, and the use of language in public and digital spaces. Modules focus on discourse analysis, multilingual collaboration, and historical and contemporary cultural expressions, while students are encouraged to engage with research methods and develop analytical skills. In the final year, students undertake a substantial project that consolidates learning, allowing for focused research on Chinese studies and language-related issues. Advanced modules explore identity, power, literature, gender, and social themes, while practical work placements provide professional experience. Across the three years, the course balances language proficiency, cultural literacy, and research competence, equipping graduates with the knowledge, skills, and employability required to succeed in careers in international business, education, translation, media, or public service.
