COURSE CURRICULUM

The Arabic and Linguistics BA provides a structured, three-year progression that combines the study of Arabic language and culture with in-depth linguistic analysis. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts in language and culture, exploring areas such as language exploration, the study of culture, material objects, and world varieties of English, alongside an introduction to the Arab world. This establishes a solid base for understanding language in its social and cultural context. In the second year, the course delves deeper into linguistic theory and application, covering child language acquisition, language structure and meaning, and the use of language in public spaces. Students also continue their engagement with Arabic culture through modules that explore expressions of Arabic culture and multilingual collaboration on current affairs. In the final year, students undertake advanced studies and independent research, focusing on applied language studies, language contact and change, and multilingualism in society, while completing a final year project. Opportunities to study contemporary Arabic issues, gender and protest, and work placements provide practical experience and professional readiness. Overall, the course equips graduates with strong linguistic skills, cultural insight, and analytical capabilities, preparing them for careers in translation, international communication, education, media, or further academic study in linguistics or Arabic studies.
