COURSE CURRICULUM

This degree offers a rich exploration of language, culture, and translation with a particular focus on Arabic and English, blending linguistic study with cultural analysis. In Year 1, students are introduced to the foundations of language and culture through modules such as introducing English language, language and text, and introduction to the study of language and culture. They also examine the Arab world, the role of words, and material culture, with an opportunity to study translation if they already have intermediate skills. Year 2 builds on this foundation with a deeper engagement in cultural and linguistic perspectives, covering topics such as spoken discourse analysis, history of the English language, and multilingual collaboration in current affairs. Modules also explore Arabic culture, literature, and the relationship between memory, history, and representation. In Year 3, the course emphasises independent research and critical engagement with complex cultural and linguistic themes. Students undertake a final year project while exploring areas such as language and power, multilingualism, identities in motion, and gender or sexuality in literature and culture. Optional work placements provide valuable professional experience. This progression ensures graduates develop advanced skills in analysis, communication, and cultural understanding, preparing them for careers in translation, education, media, or cultural sectors.
