ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Westminster is a public university in London, United Kingdom, with origins dating back to 1838 when it was founded as the Royal Polytechnic Institution, the first of its kind in the city. Officially chartered in 1839, it became the University of Westminster in 1992. Its main campus is on Regent Street, with additional campuses in Fitzrovia, Marylebone, and Harrow, as well as the Westminster International University in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The university is organized into three colleges and 12 schools, encompassing about 65 departments and research centres, including the Communication and Media Research Institute and the Centre for the Study of Democracy. With an annual income of £240.9 million in 2021–22, of which £4.25 million came from research grants, the university is also affiliated with global academic organizations such as the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the European University Association. Westminster’s alumni include Nobel laureates, inventors, politicians, artists, musicians, and filmmakers, with graduates entitled to use the post-nominal Westmin. Historically, the Royal Polytechnic Institution was built in 1837 and opened in 1838 with the aim of providing affordable practical education in science and industry. It was chaired by Sir George Cayley and soon became known for its scientific lectures, exhibitions, and pioneering photography demonstrations. Prince Albert became a patron in 1841, and the institution continued to innovate in public science education, with figures like John Henry Pepper popularizing subjects through lectures and the famous “Pepper’s ghost” theatrical effect. Despite financial challenges and setbacks, including a fire in 1879, the institution continued under different leadership. In 1881, philanthropist Quintin Hogg purchased the Regent Street site and re-established it as the Polytechnic, offering technical, scientific, and artistic education alongside recreational and cultural activities. By 1891, it was formally recognized as The Polytechnic-Regent Street, becoming a model for similar institutions across London. The Regent Street Cinema, part of the Polytechnic, hosted the UK’s first paid film screening in 1896, marking it as the birthplace of British cinema.
