COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Sport Development degree is structured to build knowledge and practical experience progressively across four years. In the first year, students gain a foundational understanding of key principles in the sport and leisure industry, including sport science, psychology, coaching, development, and health and fitness, alongside core academic and professional skills to support learning and career preparation. Year two focuses on developing knowledge of sport policy, psychosocial aspects of sport, and event management, while introducing coaching theory and practice. This year also includes the first industry placement, allowing students to apply their learning in a real-world setting. In the third year, students begin to specialise in sport development, studying social issues in sport, sport provision in schools, and sport management principles, complemented by a second placement and the development of research skills in preparation for the Honours year. The final year consolidates knowledge through modules on global issues in sport development and sport business operations, alongside elective modules tailored to individual career goals, covering areas such as talent development, exercise referral, mental health, and outdoor sport. Students also have the opportunity for an applied international field trip and complete a final-year dissertation on a sport-related topic. The program combines scheduled learning, independent study, practical application, and coursework to equip graduates with the skills and experience necessary for careers in sport development, management, and community engagement.
