COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport & Exercise Science (Physical Activity & Health) BSc (Hons) degree is structured to build knowledge and practical skills progressively over four years. In the first year, students gain a foundational understanding of sport development, coaching, and exercise science, covering subjects such as Introduction to Sport Coaching, Academic Skills for Sport and Exercise, and Introduction to Sport Science. Learning is mostly independent, with assessments focusing on coursework and practical tasks. In the second year, the program deepens understanding of core areas, including Sport and Exercise Physiology, Skill Acquisition, and Sport and Exercise Nutrition. Practical work becomes more prominent, reflecting the applied nature of the discipline. Year three expands into areas such as Sport Psychology, Sport Research and Evaluation, Physiological Adaptations to Exercise, Sport Conditioning, and Biomechanics, alongside optional modules in measurement or physical activity in health. The focus shifts to a balance of scheduled learning, independent study, and a mixture of written, practical, and coursework assessments. In the final year, students undertake advanced modules including the Sport Exercise Dissertation, Clinical Exercise Physiology, Exercise Referral in Special Populations, and interventions in sport and physical activity, with options to study Adaptive and Inclusive Sport or Applied Sport Psychology. The final year emphasizes scheduled learning and practical application, preparing students for careers in sport, exercise, and health by combining research, professional practice, and specialized knowledge.
