COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree is designed to prepare students for careers in healthcare, focusing on the identification of diseases and the improvement of patient care. Students begin with a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, and data analysis, before progressing to advanced biomedical science topics that integrate theory with practical application. A key feature of the program is the emphasis on developing hands-on laboratory and research skills, ensuring graduates are confident in performing a range of scientific techniques essential for modern healthcare settings. The degree is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), which is required for those aiming to work in the NHS, and the Applied route is also approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), providing professional recognition. The Applied program includes a 15-week integrated placement in a partner NHS hospital laboratory, offering students real-world experience in biomedical diagnostics and research. Entry to this route is competitive due to the limited number of placements and is available after successful completion of Year 2 in the Biomedical Science program. Graduates are equipped with the knowledge, practical skills, and professional credentials needed to work effectively as biomedical scientists in clinical, research, or healthcare environments, while also being well-prepared for further postgraduate study or specialised professional training.
