COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Applied Bioscience with Forensic Investigation program is structured over four years, combining biological sciences with forensic applications to develop both scientific and investigative skills. In year one, students are introduced to a broad range of biological disciplines, from cell and molecular biology to ecological and environmental topics, while also learning about the role of a forensic scientist and examining real case examples. Year two focuses on developing practical forensic skills, including identifying, collecting, and analysing biological trace evidence from crime scenes, as well as gaining expertise in microscopy. Students also study core bioscience subjects such as molecular genetics, biochemistry, pharmacology, and microbiology. In year three, learning becomes more applied, with students studying DNA analysis and controlled substances while investigating simulated crime scene scenarios. They can also specialise in areas such as microbiology, immunology, or biochemistry, and may undertake a 12-week work placement in a laboratory setting to enhance employability. In the final year, students explore advanced forensic topics, understanding processes from crime scene investigation to courtroom presentation. A key component is a supervised research project, allowing students to investigate a topic of interest. Overall, the program combines theory, practical skills, and real-world experience for careers in forensic and bioscience fields.
