COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Midwifery program is structured over three years, combining academic study with extensive practical placements to develop competent and confident midwives. In Year 1, students receive a broad introduction to midwifery, exploring health and public health concepts, parenthood, and the professional role of the midwife. Modules focus on life sciences, caring skills, professional development, and personal growth, with practical placements integrated to allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in real clinical settings. Assessment is evenly split between practical performance and coursework. Year 2 builds on this foundation, concentrating on midwifery practice and the identification of medical, obstetric, and social risk factors in pregnancy. Students also study critical care, neonatal care, and continue hands-on clinical experience through placements. This year strengthens practical skills while fostering the ability to assess, plan, and deliver safe care. In Year 3, students further develop independence, decision-making, and critical thinking, focusing on research, quality improvement, and holistic midwifery practice. This year emphasizes the professional standards required for registration as a Registered Midwife, ensuring students are ready to practice safely and competently. Across all three years, the equal balance of practical and academic assessment ensures graduates emerge with the knowledge, skills, and professional experience necessary to support women and families throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenthood.
