COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons) program is structured to provide a progressive and comprehensive education in engineering principles, design, and application. In Year 1, students develop a strong foundation in engineering mechanics, materials, and mathematics, alongside professional and industrial studies, with an emphasis on communication and IT skills essential for modern engineering practice. Year 2 builds on this foundation with topics such as strength of materials, thermofluid mechanics, materials and manufacturing technology, and introduces the formal engineering design process, computer-aided technology, IT-related techniques, and aspects of engineering management. In Year 3, students enhance their skills in design and applied mechanics while exploring thermodynamics, rapid prototyping, experimental testing, intelligent systems, control technologies, and advanced computer-based analysis and simulation, together with project management techniques that prepare them for real-world engineering challenges. The Honours year focuses on applied mechanics, covering plasticity, fracture, and vibrations, while also introducing composite structures, renewable energy systems, and sustainability considerations. Further exploration of computer-aided engineering design and computational fluid dynamics is undertaken, alongside a major individual project that allows students to consolidate their learning, demonstrate practical and analytical abilities, and address complex engineering problems. Throughout the program, students gain the knowledge, practical skills, and industry awareness necessary for a successful career in mechanical engineering or further postgraduate study.
