COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Law program is structured over four years to progressively develop students’ understanding of legal principles, critical thinking, and professional skills. In Year 1, students gain a foundation in key areas of Scots law through core modules including Foundations of Law, Foundations of Rights, Constitutional Law, Scots Criminal Law, and Voluntary Obligations. These modules focus on building essential legal knowledge and competencies, while the Aspire module supports personal and professional development, helping students reflect on learning strategies and enhance academic skills. Year 2 deepens this understanding with core study in Property, Trusts, and Succession, providing a comprehensive view of Scots Private Law, alongside a second Aspire module. Students also choose from optional modules such as Family Law, Roman Law in Scots Private Law Contexts, Consumers and the Law, and Legal Advocacy Skills, allowing them to begin specialising. Year 3 introduces critical approaches to law, focusing on International Human Rights Law and Law Dissertation Skills, alongside options such as ICT Law, Public International Law, and Immigration and Asylum Law. This year encourages independent learning, international comparisons, and the possibility of studying abroad. In Year 4, students apply accumulated skills in seminar-based learning, completing a 40-credit Honours dissertation on a chosen legal topic, and select 80 credits of optional modules to refine specialisms, developing the analytical and professional expertise required for careers in law or law-related fields.
