COURSE CURRICULUM

The Community Education BA (Hons) program is structured over four years to develop students’ theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional identity. In the first year, students are introduced to key concepts in education, sociology, and psychology, along with community learning and development competences that support personal and professional development. They explore social theory, power, and community contexts, while building communication, group work, and academic skills, and undertaking a practice-based module. In the second year, students examine participation and inclusion strategies at both local and global levels, applying these ideas in different contexts while developing leadership skills through a project-focused practice placement. The third year deepens understanding of critical pedagogy and its role in promoting equality and social justice, while also addressing the challenges of managing people and resources and introducing practice-based research. Students complete a capstone project within a placement, evaluating its impact and presenting their work in a practical format. In the final year, students further develop their professional identity by studying social policy and inter-professional practice, alongside completing a research dissertation linked to their field experience. Overall, the program integrates theory, practice, and research to prepare students for careers in community education.
