COURSE CURRICULUM

The Commercial Music BA (Hons) program is structured over four years to support the development of both creative and professional skills within the music industry. In the first year, students are introduced to the theory and practice of music performance, production, business, and cultural studies, while also exploring a wide range of musical areas to broaden their understanding and interests. The second year allows students to begin focusing on their chosen specialism, whether in performance, production, business, or theory, while also developing knowledge of media theory and intellectual property, and gaining insight into different sectors of the music industry. In the third year, students deepen their expertise in their selected area through more advanced study and complete a major self-directed project, with opportunities for work-related learning that provide valuable industry experience. The final honours year centres on a significant creative research project, where students can either produce a detailed dissertation or develop a substantial piece of music-based creative work. Throughout this year, mentoring and career planning activities help students prepare for employment. Overall, the program combines creative exploration, specialised learning, and practical experience to prepare graduates for careers in the music industry.
