ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of the West of Scotland (UWS), formerly the University of Paisley, is a public university with campuses in Paisley, Blantyre, Dumfries, Ayr, and London. Its roots trace back to the 19th century, beginning with the School of Arts in Paisley, established in 1836 through the efforts of philanthropists like Peter and Thomas Coats. This school evolved into a Government School of Design in 1846, later becoming Paisley Technical College and School of Art. Over the years, the institution expanded and adapted, eventually gaining Central Institution status in 1950 as Paisley College of Technology. In 1992, it achieved university status as the University of Paisley under the Further and Higher Education Act. A merger with Craigie College of Education in 1993 extended its reach to Ayr. The university merged with Bell College, Hamilton, in 2007, leading to the formation of UWS. Though the name change faced local resistance, UWS has grown to be one of Scotland's largest modern universities, with over 16,000 students and four academic schools.UWS continues to emphasize professional education and innovation. Its legacy reflects a continuous evolution from local technical training to a university with international reach and modern infrastructure.
