ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) is a public research university located in and around Bristol, England, and is the largest higher education provider in the South West of England, with over 38,000 students and 4,500 staff. Its origins trace back to the Merchant Venturers’ Navigation School, founded in 1595 by the Society of Merchant Venturers, which later became the Merchant Venturers Technical College in 1894. This institution played a key role in the creation of the University of Bristol and the Bristol College of Science and Technology, which eventually became the University of Bath. The technical college evolved into Bristol Polytechnic in 1970, incorporating several campuses including Ashley Down, Redland, Unity Street, St Matthias, and Bower Ashton, which was formed as the West of England College of Art in 1969. UWE Bristol gained university status in 1992 under the Further and Higher Education Act and adopted its current name. Subsequent expansions included the integration of the Avon and Gloucestershire College of Health (now Glenside Campus) and the Bath and Swindon College of Health Studies in 1996, followed by Hartpury Campus in 1997. UWE Bristol comprises multiple campuses in Greater Bristol, with Frenchay Campus being the largest and the main site for most courses. The City Campus focuses on creative and cultural industries and includes Bower Ashton Studios, Arnolfini, Spike Island, and Watershed, while Glenside Campus hosts the College of Health, Science and Society. The university is affiliated with the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and validates its higher education programs. In addition to teaching and research, UWE Bristol served as a lead academic sponsor for the Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy until its closure in 2022. In 2016, the university launched a rebranding campaign as part of its Strategy 2020, introducing a refreshed visual identity and logo to reflect its modernized approach to education and research. UWE Bristol continues to combine a rich historical legacy with innovative teaching and research, making it a key institution in the region.
